Lin-Manuel Miranda: not throwing away his shot

You might have heard the name ‘Lin-Manuel Miranda’ a lot recently. He is considered one of the biggest musical theatre legends of the early twenty-first century. For instance, his successful musicals In the Heights (2005) and Hamilton (2015) brought contemporary hip-hop and rap to Broadway. But he is also proving to be a rising star in Hollywood. He has a lot of song writing involvement in animated films such as Moana (2016) and Encanto (2021). Furthermore, he recently made his critically acclaimed directorial debut with tick, tick…BOOM! (2021).

I’ve wanted to examine the works of creators I admire for a little while now. So, when I watched Encanto and the In the Heights film adaptation late last year, I knew that Lin-Manuel Miranda would be fantastic to write about!

Don’t Look Up- coping during a crisis

Note: this post contains spoilers for Don’t Look Up (2021)

Last week, I watched Netflix’s 2021 disaster-comedy film, Don’t Look Up. I heard from others that it was depressing to watch, due to its astute social commentary and grim ending. However, I found Don’t Look Up‘s ending quite comforting. I had a similar reaction to Bo Burnham: Inside (2021) which was also about coping during a crisis.

There is an abundance of articles, reviews, and video essays discussing the ‘doom and gloom’ of Don’t Look Up. So, I would like to talk about the optimistic lessons I’ve learnt from the film.

Homer’s Enemy- passive and active mindsets

It’s undeniable that The Simpsons holds a lasting impact on how we view sitcoms and animation. Many pop-culture nerds, including myself, have analysed and interpreted the many complex characters and their interactions. However, with over 30 seasons and numerous writers, analysing even one character from The Simpsons can become complicated. So, I’d like to focus on an episode that I believe leaves a significant impression. It is season 8, episode 23, Homer’s Enemy.
